Boise Cascade Stock Hits 12-Month Low Amid Building Materials Sector Downturn

Boise Cascade (NYSE: BCC) shares reached a new 12-month low of $72.15 today, signaling broader challenges within the timber and building materials industry as rising interest rates impact housing demand.

The stock closed at $72.54 on October 13, 2025, continuing a downward trend that saw dips to $72.32 on October 10 and $74.52 on October 7, following a September decline to $76.15 on September 29. Despite the bearish trend, several analysts, including those at DA Davidson, BMO Capital Markets, and Truist Financial, maintain a “Moderate Buy” or “Buy” rating, suggesting potential undervaluation. The company has attempted to bolster investor confidence through increased quarterly dividends and share buyback programs.

The decline is largely attributed to weak demand and pricing for wood products, particularly engineered wood products (EWP), with Boise Cascade’s Wood Products segment experiencing a 9% sales drop and an 81% income plummet in Q2 2025. This slowdown is exacerbated by persistently high mortgage rates stifling new home construction, a key driver for Boise Cascade’s products. The U.S. housing market’s struggles are well-documented by the National Association of Realtors, which recently reported declining home sales for the fifth consecutive month. Further complicating matters are negative earnings reported for four consecutive quarters, increased competition in the EWP market, and broader economic uncertainty.

The current challenges facing Boise Cascade are indicative of a wider reckoning within the sector, with companies like West Fraser Timber Co. (NYSE: WFG) also feeling the squeeze. However, timberland REITs like Weyerhaeuser (NYSE: WY) are demonstrating resilience due to vertical integration and benefiting from U.S. tariffs on Canadian lumber. Officials stated they will continue to monitor market conditions and adjust strategies accordingly.
