Arkansas Falls to Michigan State in Close Contest, 69-66

The University of Arkansas men’s basketball team suffered a narrow 69-66 defeat against No. 22 Michigan State yesterday, marking an early-season test for the Razorbacks.

Head Coach John Calipari expressed frustration with stretches of poor shooting, stating, “I was trying to space the court and do some things and then I said, ‘Screw it, grind with them.’ ‘That’s the only way. They’re going to grind us for 30 seconds, we’re going to shoot in seven? You’re going to get buried.'” Arkansas struggled to maintain offensive momentum, going cold from the field for extended periods, including a 2:43 stretch without a field goal. The game was a physical battle, with both teams shooting just 40.1% from the floor. This loss comes as Arkansas faces a challenging schedule that includes matchups against other Elite Eight teams from last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Freshman forward Cam Ward led Michigan State with 18 points, while Arkansas was paced by Meleek Thomas and Darius Acuff Jr., each with 16 points. Calipari highlighted the need for his young players to learn from the experience, noting, “I appreciate the fact that you had the courage to shoot that again,” he said to Thomas, “But I also told him, ‘You got it back and D.J. Wagner was wide open. Throw him the ball.'” Sophomore Karter Knox made his season debut after recovering from a toe sprain, contributing 4 assists but also 4 turnovers. Despite the loss, Calipari remained optimistic about his team’s development, emphasizing the importance of accountability and growth. “We learned about each other. Guys got to take responsibility, hold themselves accountable. That’s hard,” he said. The Razorbacks will return home to host Central Arkansas on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
