Norrie to Face Alcaraz in Paris Masters Second Round
Cameron Norrie will challenge top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of the Rolex Paris Masters today, marking their second meeting this year and offering Norrie a chance to avenge a straight-sets defeat at Wimbledon.
The match, scheduled for Tuesday at the La Defense Arena in Paris, pits the World No. 31 Briton against the No. 1 Alcaraz. Norrie secured his place in the second round yesterday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sebastian Baez, a match he described as valuable preparation. “I was a little bit nervous, but it’s a nice new feeling to be playing here in La Défense,” Norrie said. A strong performance in Paris could significantly boost Norrie’s ranking as he aims to finish the season strongly.
Despite Alcaraz leading their head-to-head series 5-2, Norrie believes the court conditions favor his game. He noted the slower court speed compared to previous years, allowing for more effective use of his topspin forehand. “For sure I like it… the ball’s bouncing up a little bit more than I remember,” Norrie explained. Alcaraz, who has eight titles this year according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, comes into the match refreshed after winning the Tokyo title.
Norrie, whose 2024 season was hampered by a forearm injury, is looking to build on his recent form, including a final appearance at the ATP 250 in Metz and a Top 10 win over Lorenzo Musetti in Washington. “I’m going to take it to him… I always have battles with him,” Norrie stated, adding that he is seeking “revenge” for his Wimbledon loss. Officials anticipate a competitive match, with both players aiming to solidify their positions ahead of the season-ending championships.
