Portuguese singer Carlos Mendes, known for representing his country in the Eurovision Song Contest in both 1968 and 1972, recently discussed his career and experiences in a podcast appearance. Mendes celebrated 60 years in music with the release of a triple CD and a biography titled “Carlos Mendes – Architect of Sounds.”

During the 1972 competition in Edinburgh, Mendes achieved a 7th-place finish, which remains Portugal’s best result in the contest to date. However, he revealed he had greater ambitions. He recounted an incident that occurred during the event: “I had just gotten married. Someone comes up to me and says, ‘the juror from that country wants to meet you.’ I responded that I couldn’t”. “First place, goodbye…” he added.

The singer’s comments offer a glimpse into the competitive dynamics of international music events and the pressures faced by performers. Mendes’s career highlights a period of significant cultural exchange and the growing influence of televised entertainment.
