Authorities are warning drivers in Mexico City about a growing scam targeting motorists, with reports of attempted robberies increasing across several boroughs. The tactic, known as the “False Mechanic” scheme, involves individuals falsely claiming a vehicle has mechanical issues in an attempt to trick drivers into stopping.

A recent video circulating online shows four people attempting to flag down a driver on the Periférico, a major roadway in the Álvaro Obregón borough. The incident, shared by journalist Carlos Jiménez on X, highlights a concerning trend of similar attempts occurring throughout the city.

The scheme typically involves multiple individuals alerting drivers to supposed vehicle malfunctions, creating a sense of fear and prompting them to pull over, where they can then be robbed. In some cases, perpetrators pose as mechanics, offering to make unnecessary repairs and demanding exorbitant fees.

In the video, the four suspects repeatedly signaled to the driver of a silver car, attempting to convince them their vehicle had a problem. Despite the driver ignoring their signals, one of the individuals briefly stepped in front of the car in an effort to stop it. A woman recording the incident can be heard shouting “thief” as the suspect retreated. The case underscores the need for vigilance among drivers in the area.

Social media users have reported similar incidents on other major roadways in Mexico City, suggesting the “False Mechanic” scam is becoming increasingly widespread. Many are sharing their experiences and warning others to be cautious.

As of now, authorities have not commented on this specific case. However, drivers are advised to avoid stopping for civilians claiming vehicle issues, especially in heavy traffic or suspicious circumstances. Officials recommend remaining calm, continuing to drive if possible, and seeking assistance from law enforcement if they encounter unusual behavior.
