Son of ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Pleads Guilty in U.S. Drug Trafficking Case

Joaquín Guzmán López, son of convicted drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges in a U.S. federal court, according to multiple reports. The plea comes as part of a deal with U.S. authorities and sheds light on the inner workings of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the world.

Guzmán López, also known as “Joaquín Guzmán López,” admitted guilt in Chicago, Illinois, on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. The charges stem from his alleged involvement in trafficking large quantities of narcotics into the United States. Details of the agreement remain largely sealed, but the move suggests Guzmán López is cooperating with investigators.

During a court hearing, prosecutors revealed details of a 2016 kidnapping orchestrated by Guzmán López – the abduction of Jesús Alfredo Zambada García, known as “El Mayo Zambada,” a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa Cartel. According to testimony, Guzmán López had “El Mayo” Zambada kidnapped and then handed him over to U.S. authorities. Prosecutors stated Guzmán López admitted to sedating Zambada during the operation.

“He had him sedated,” prosecutors said during the hearing, as reported by MILENIO. The kidnapping was reportedly carried out to demonstrate Guzmán López’s loyalty to his father and the cartel.

The charges accepted by Guzmán López have not been fully disclosed, but reports indicate they relate to conspiracy to traffic cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. Animal Político reported that the plea was reached after an agreement with U.S. authorities.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts by U.S. law enforcement to dismantle the Sinaloa Cartel and bring its leaders and associates to justice. Guzmán López’s cooperation could provide valuable intelligence regarding the cartel’s operations and structure. His father, “El Chapo” Guzmán, is currently serving a life sentence in a U.S. prison.

El Financiero and Reforma also reported on the guilty plea.
