For Android users missing the tactile experience of dedicated music players, a new application is offering a step back in time. ClassiPod, developed by Adeeteya, recreates the interface and functionality of AppleS iconic iPod, complete with a responsive click wheel, for modern smartphones. Released following Apple’s discontinuation of the iPod line in 2022, the app taps into a growing desire for offline, focused music listening experiences-a departure from the ubiquity of streaming services.

Android users are getting a blast from the past with ClassiPod, a free application designed to recreate the experience of owning a classic iPod. The app, developed by Adeeteya, meticulously mimics the iconic interface and functionality of the original iPod, including its signature click wheel, offering a nostalgic trip for music lovers.

Apple discontinued the iPod line in 2022, marking the end of a 21-year era that saw the company transform from a computer hardware manufacturer into a global technology giant. While the decision may not have registered with all consumers, the loss of the iPod represented a shift away from a dedicated, immersive music listening experience.

ClassiPod aims to fill that void. Released to address the longing of Apple fans for a return to the classic iPod experience, the application delivers what it promises: “Your Timeless Audio Experience.” It brings back the responsive, click-wheel functionality – complete with sound – that many users have missed since Apple’s discontinuation of the device.

How ClassiPod Recreates the iPod Experience

The app replicates the iPod Classic interface by dividing the phone screen into two sections: a mini display at the top and a responsive click wheel at the bottom. A key feature of ClassiPod is its ability to operate offline, allowing users to play their locally stored music collections without relying on an internet connection. This focus on offline playback is a key differentiator in an era dominated by streaming services.

ClassiPod automatically scans for and reads locally stored music files, supporting popular audio formats including .mp3, .wav, .ogg, .flac, .m4a, and .aac, according to information from the developer’s GitHub page. Once downloaded, users can navigate their music library in a way that closely mirrors the classic iPod experience, complete with prominent horizontal album art scrolling.

The application also revives more detailed features, such as a star rating system for songs and the ability to create “On The Go” playlists. Users can also customize the app’s appearance, choosing from a variety of iPod colors and click wheel sizes. However, some users, including YouTuber Sam Beckman, have reported a decrease in visual quality when using brighter iPod color themes.

Further customization options include disabling touchscreen functionality and adjusting click wheel sensitivity. An immersive mode offers a full-screen view, while users can also enable a split-screen display, mirroring the functionality of 6th and 7th generation iPod Classic models.

User Response and Ongoing Development

ClassiPod has received positive feedback from users who appreciate the blend of nostalgia and practicality. With a 4.4-star rating from nearly 500 reviews and over 10,000 downloads on Google Play, the app has established a solid reputation within the Android community.

The app’s popularity has also attracted attention from prominent YouTube content creators who have reviewed it on their channels. While generally well-received, some users have reported issues with the music library scanning functionality, while others have expressed frustration at not being able to select specific music directories for media scanning.

Fortunately, Adeeteya is known for actively responding to user feedback and is open to contributions from the community via GitHub. The developer also states that they are working on additional features, including iPod-style games, lyrics support, a photo viewer, and video support.

Currently, the open-source application is available for download through Google Play, F-Droid, and GitHub. These platforms also provide helpful download guides, feature updates, and troubleshooting tips. Unfortunately, ClassiPod is not yet available on the App Store, meaning iPhone users must consider alternative hardware options like the AiMoonsa Music Player, JadeAudio/FiiO JM21, or HiBy Digital M300.

For Android users, however, ClassiPod offers a compelling opportunity to relive the immersive and minimalist experience of the classic iPod.
