Coronation Street Writer Reveals Initial Opposition to Becky Swain’s Return
A writer for the long-running ITV drama Coronation Street has revealed significant internal debate and initial resistance to the storyline bringing back character Becky Swain from the dead, a plot point that has divided viewers.
The controversial decision to resurrect Swain, whose return has complicated the relationship between Lisa Swain and Carla Connor, was initially “tossed in there like a hand grenade,” according to one of the show’s writers. Jen McVerry explained that the idea was “initially kind of laughed off” during a writers’ meeting, as the team had previously established the authenticity of Lisa’s grief following Becky’s supposed death. “I was saying, ‘we can’t do that, we’ll totally break faith with the viewers and it totally undermines all that we’ve suffered alongside Lisa and we’ve believed her grief,’” McVerry stated. She also expressed concerns about the storyline’s implications for the portrayal of law enforcement, fearing it would depict the police as either corrupt or incompetent.
Despite her initial strong opposition – admitting she was “so angry about it” – McVerry, alongside fellow writer Ella Greenhill, ultimately took on the task of crafting the storyline. They focused on finding ways to make the “uncomfortable” narrative work, addressing potential plot holes and ensuring the story felt as compelling as possible. This storyline has sparked considerable discussion among fans, impacting online forums and social media engagement with the show. McVerry acknowledged the divided reaction to Becky’s return, stating, “I know people have hated it and people have loved it – but at least it’s got people talking!” ITV has confirmed that Coronation Street continues to air on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8pm, and is available for streaming on ITVX.
