Dodgers, Yankees Expected to Compete for Japanese Star Munetaka Murakami
The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees are anticipated to be major contenders for the signing of highly sought-after Japanese third baseman Munetaka Murakami when he becomes a free agent in 2026.
Murakami, 25, has played eight seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Yakult Swallows, amassing 265 home runs in 1003 games. He is expected to be posted this winter, making him eligible for Major League Baseball contracts beginning in 2026. His arrival would represent a significant infusion of power hitting, as he belted 56 home runs in 2022, breaking a 58-year-old record for Japanese-born players.
The Dodgers have a potential need at third base as Max Muncy will be 36 years old in 2026, and the team experienced infield instability due to injuries throughout the latter half of the 2025 season. This pursuit of Murakami signals the Dodgers’ intent to proactively address potential long-term positional needs following their World Series victory. The Yankees also have a vacancy at the position, with Ryan McMahon, who filled the role temporarily, entering free agency.
One scout described Murakami as possessing “legit power,” comparing him to Hideki Matsui as a pure power hitter transitioning from NPB to the Majors. Securing a player of Murakami’s caliber could significantly bolster either team’s lineup for years to come.
Team officials have indicated they will closely monitor Murakami’s posting process this winter, with both clubs prepared to make competitive offers.
