Western New Mexico University Reports Surge in Student Food Insecurity, Launches Urgent Fundraising Drive

Western New Mexico University (WNMU) is facing a critical increase in student food insecurity alongside a decrease in available funding, prompting an urgent fundraising campaign called Round Up for Hunger.

University metrics show approximately 650 student visits each month to WNMU’s One Stop support services – encompassing the campus pantry and mobile distributions – a number that continues to rise. A recent statewide survey, the 2023 UNM Basic Needs Project, indicates that as many as 75% of WNMU students may be experiencing food insecurity, a situation exacerbated by the approaching holiday break when campus resources are limited. This growing need comes at a time when many students are already struggling with the rising cost of living and tuition.

“The immediate focus is on ensuring students have access to meals,” said Student Services Coordinator Kimberly Woodard. “Last year, One Stop was able to distribute 98,000 pounds of food from Roadrunner Food Bank alone, but even Roadrunner is experiencing significant strain.” The university has also lost crucial funding from the ECMC Project Success grant, which previously supported hygiene products, storage, and emergency aid workshops. Donations from long-time partners, like local schools and community organizations, are also declining due to their own financial constraints. Community members can support Round Up for Hunger through several avenues: rounding up purchases at the WNMU Bookstore and athletic events, receiving a 20% ticket discount for donating non-perishable food items at games, or making direct monetary donations via a QR code on campaign posters, which directs donors to the WNMU Foundation. Officials say they will continue to seek alternative funding sources and encourage ongoing community support to address this pressing issue.
