Chess Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky Dies at 29

Daniel Naroditsky, a chess grandmaster and influential figure in the sport, died yesterday, October 20, 2025, at the age of 29.

The Charlotte Chess Center in North Carolina announced Naroditsky’s death on social media, describing him as “a talented chess player, educator, and beloved member of the chess community.” Naroditsky achieved the title of grandmaster – the highest ranking in chess – at age 18, and was consistently ranked among the world’s top 200 players in traditional chess and the top 25 in blitz chess. He recently won the U.S. National Blitz Championship in August.

Naroditsky, known as Danya to many, significantly broadened the reach of chess through livestreaming his matches and providing commentary on platforms like YouTube and Twitch. “He loved streaming, and he loved trying to be educational. The chess world is very grateful,” fellow grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura said during a livestream today. His ability to connect with audiences online helped fuel a surge in chess’s popularity, particularly during the pandemic, as people sought engaging online activities. He shared a video on his YouTube channel just days ago, titled “You Thought I Was Gone!?”

Born in California to Ukrainian and Azerbaijani immigrants, Naroditsky was a child prodigy, winning the Under 12 world championship in 2007. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University in 2019 before moving to Charlotte, where he coached junior players. The cause of death has not yet been released, and officials are awaiting further information. You can learn more about the rules and rankings of chess at the United States Chess Federation website.

The Charlotte Chess Center stated that the family will share a statement in the coming days.
