‘Death Stranding’ Animated Series Coming to Disney+ in 2027
The critically acclaimed video game franchise Death Stranding is expanding with a new animated series, Death Stranding Isolations (working title), set to premiere on Disney+ in 2027.
The announcement came today during Disney’s Asia Pacific originals content showcase in Hong Kong, where game creator Hideo Kojima made a surprise appearance alongside director Takayuki Sano (Bullet/Bullet, Gridman Universe). Kojima will serve as executive producer, and the series will feature character designs by Ilya Kuvshinov, known for his work on Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. This marks a significant move for the franchise, which already includes a sequel game released this year and a feature film in development with A24.
Kojima explained that he chose to pursue animation to explore storytelling possibilities unique to the medium, stating through a translator that the series will be “pretty mind-blowing.” He also revealed the series will introduce new characters, separate from the storylines of the video games. “I realized there were people who may not play video games, and I wanted to share the world of Death Stranding with more people,” Kojima said. The series will employ a traditional hand-drawn 2D animation style, produced by E&H Production (Ninja Kamui, Red Cat Ramen). Disney+ outlined the plot, stating it will follow “a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure” within the Death Stranding universe. Kojima noted his longstanding admiration for Disney, citing their collaboration on the 2023 documentary, Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds, as the catalyst for the project. Disney approached him while working on the documentary. Further details regarding casting and specific storylines are expected to be released in the coming months.
