Decathlon Accelerates European Expansion with New Strategic Store Openings
French sporting goods giant Decathlon is aggressively expanding its retail footprint with a series of new store launches across Germany, signaling a strategic push to capture greater market share in the sports equipment sector. This expansion effort is aimed at increasing accessibility to its wide range of athletic gear and apparel through a mix of flagship and specialized “multisport” locations.

In Saarbrücken, the company is set to open a new flagship store in the Saarbasar shopping center on April 24, 2026. The retailer will occupy the space previously held by fashion retailer Adler, offering a comprehensive selection of sports clothing, footwear, and equipment. This move underscores the company’s strategy of utilizing high-traffic commercial hubs to drive brand visibility.
Furthering its reach in the region, Decathlon will also launch a significant presence in Trier on Friday, May 15, 2026. Located in the basement of the Galeria department store (formerly Kaufhof) on Simeonstraße, the new branch will feature approximately 2,000 square meters of retail space. This location is classified as a “multisport store,” a category that typically ranges from 1,000 to 8,000 square meters and provides a broad product assortment across up to 75 different sports.
The Trier opening marks a shift in the company’s local strategy. In December 2022, Decathlon had previously stated it lacked plans for a Trier location due to the absence of a site that was both conveniently located and easily accessible from the surrounding countryside. The transition to a city-center location demonstrates a flexible approach to urban retail integration.
Beyond these cities, the company is also expanding its network in Brunnthal, near Munich, further diversifying its geographical presence. These coordinated openings reflect a broader corporate trajectory of growth, as the company leverages its expansive product catalog to attract a diverse customer base across various sporting disciplines.
