Bethesda and ZeniMax Online Studios are fundamentally reshaping the content delivery system for *The Elder Scrolls Online*, moving away from expansive, chapter-based releases to a more dynamic seasonal model. The changes, detailed in a recent announcement, respond directly to player feedback regarding the pacing and cost of previous updates.
Beginning with Season Zero in spring 2026, players can anticipate quarterly content drops and a greater emphasis on community involvement throughout the development process.
Bethesda and Zenimax have been quietly preparing a significant shift in how they deliver content for their massively multiplayer online role-playing game, *The Elder Scrolls Online*. The changes, unveiled during a recent online Season Announcement event hosted by Senior Creator Engagement Manager Gina Bruno and Associate Director of Community Management Jessica Folsom, alongside Game Director Nick Giacomini and Executive Producer Susan Kath, mark a departure from the traditional “chapter-based” seasonal model.
Focus on Community Feedback: Building ESO “Together”

The presentation began with a look back at *The Elder Scrolls Online*’s twelve years of development. “It’s incredible: when I think about the history of ESO it’s full of… resilience and transformations,” said Director Giacomini. “We’ve made a lot of innovative decisions, and we’re capable of big changes. This is one of those moments, the moment to change. You’ve told us the game has become predictable, and that’s not what we want.”
The studio explained that the chapter structure often led to lengthy periods of downtime and transition, creating a constant chase for the “next update,” described by Bruno as “an unstoppable train.” This approach, they said, hindered creativity and flexibility.
The future of *ESO*, according to Bethesda and Zenimax, will center on faster responses to player feedback, increased community involvement, and a collaborative approach to game development. “We’ll achieve this by evolving our approach as we experiment with new ways to satisfy you and be satisfied,” continued Community Manager Folsom, “with more Q&A sessions, dedicated articles previewing content, live streams, and posts on Reddit.” This emphasis on community engagement reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry, where developers are increasingly prioritizing player input.
Seasons Replace Chapters
Giacomini announced the shift from chapters to Seasons as a way to deliver updates and content on a quarterly basis, but with less predictability. “We’ll still be telling new stories, and there will be dungeons and other content as usual, but each season could be radically different from the last.” The change aims to eliminate the pressure to constantly seek out “the next big thing,” allowing developers to focus on refining and improving existing features.
Producer Susan Kath added that the chapter-based DLC system had become confusing and costly for many players. “That’s why, starting with Season Zero, all new content and features will be available for free to everyone—whether you play with Xbox Game Pass, or own the game on PlayStation.” While some content will remain behind a paywall, Kath clarified that all content previously exclusive to paid chapters will now be released as free updates.
This represents a significant change that could attract new players and entice returning players to experience the latest updates without incurring additional costs.
Seasons will feature a variable mix of PvE content, story elements, zones, and experimental features—like the previously tested “Whrithing Wall”—with the potential for further additions, as indicated by the “and more” note on the content roadmap.
Season Zero is slated for release in spring 2026, followed by Season One in summer and Season Two in autumn. Season Zero will introduce a battle pass, a new PvP progression system, new difficulty settings, and a new group event zone called the Night Market.
Season One will focus on storylines and quests related to the Thieves Guild, along with dynamic world events and narrative arcs titled “Sheograth,” and a new trial called the Crimson Veldt. Updates to classes, combat systems, UI adjustments, and other improvements are planned throughout the seasons, culminating in Season Two’s “High Seas of Tamriel” event, two solo dungeons (Moon Hunter Keep and March of Sacrifices), and a large-scale Dynamic Storms event set in Skyrim. Players will receive more detailed information about these updates in the coming year.
Paid Content: What Remains?
Kath explained the introduction of the Tamriel Tome, describing it as a battle pass-style system for *ESO*. “It’s our way of offering a different kind of progression, with a book for each season whose pages represent unlockable tiers as you play and complete missions.”
The Tamriel Tome will have a free version and a paid version with more rewards tied to gameplay. The more you play, the more items and rewards you earn.
“The Tome’s missions will span the entire ESO catalog, from trials to PvP, crafting, and dungeons—whatever your playstyle, you can even re-roll weekly missions to find one that suits you.”
The team has focused on ensuring that even the free rewards are appealing and engaging, including new armor, skill styles, housing items, and weapon styles.
For those who choose to pay, two options will be available: Premium ($14.99) and Premium+ ($29.99), differing in tier progression speed and bonus content. Both paid versions offer unlimited time to complete all tiers, while free players have approximately three months per season to claim all rewards.
A new in-game store, the Gold Coast Bazaar, was also revealed. This store is theoretically separate from the Pass, as the currency used for purchases is a potential reward from the Tome. However, it was mentioned in conjunction with the Tome because it will offer both new and previously exclusive items in exchange for Trade Bars.
“Previously, to redeem these items after an event ended, you had to wait for us to bring the event back on special occasions, but now with the Bazaar you’ll have a fixed location where you know you can always find everything you missed,” said Game Director Giacomini. Importantly, Trade Bars can only be earned through the Tome or gameplay, and cannot be purchased directly with real money or Crowns.
Event Tickets will be phased out, replaced by the Bazaar+Bars system, but existing tickets will be converted into Bars.
Finally, the team explained how the shift from chapters to seasons will integrate with the ESO Plus program. “First, a reassurance,” said Kath, “the cost of ESO Plus will not change, and there will be no changes to the amount of unique rewards and content included. Rather, there will be greater benefits tied to the Tome and Seasons, such as boosts to tier progression and a token for free access to a month of Premium+ in the Tamriel Tome each year.”
Quality of Life Improvements and the Night Market!
The presentation continued with a focus on game improvements, including Update 49, which will include numerous “quality of life” enhancements. One highly requested feature—the ability to respec skills and attributes through the UI—will be implemented for all players without any cost.
Additionally, outfits will now be account-bound instead of character-bound, and mounts will be trainable more quickly, with three stat upgrades per level instead of one. A new mount will also be available for purchase with in-game gold, along with more slots for housing items for both free and ESO Plus users. These refinements, while subtle, will be appreciated by veteran players, particularly the respec feature.
The Night Market, a new “event zone” planned for Update 49, was then discussed. Game Designer Nick explained that event zones are experimental content areas designed to test new concepts, mechanics, and difficulty levels.
Specifically, the Night Market is a PvE zone located in Fargrave, populated by challenging opponents. It’s intended as a difficult challenge for players to tackle individually or in groups.
Players will be able to align with a faction within the area, initiating a competition. Exclusive rewards include a customizable and upgradeable house. The Night Market will open on April 29, 2026, and will remain active until mid-June, with a potential return later in the year if it proves popular.
