EU Plans Anti-Drone System, Boosted Defenses Amid Russia Concerns
The European Union is accelerating plans to establish a fully operational anti-drone system by the end of 2027 and bolster its overall defenses, aiming for full preparedness for potential conflict with Russia by 2030.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the initiative today in Brussels, stating, “Drones are already redefining warfare. Having drone defences is no longer optional for anyone.” The move comes as several EU nations have reported Russian incursions into their airspace and follows calls from the United States for the bloc to strengthen its security. The European Commission’s “defence roadmap” also prioritizes reinforcing the EU’s eastern borders and creating air and space “shields.”
European Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius emphasized the plan’s timeline, noting, “Our roadmap shows all the major milestones to achieve defence readiness by 2030, so we can deter Russian aggression, prevent war and preserve peace.” The initiative seeks to address critical capability gaps in areas like air and missile defense and artillery systems through joint development and procurement, working in close coordination with NATO. This increased focus on defense reflects growing anxieties about potential Russian aggression beyond Ukraine, particularly given uncertainty surrounding the long-term US commitment to European security.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently denied any aggressive intentions toward the EU, calling claims of planned attacks “nonsense.” However, tensions have recently escalated with reported airspace violations in Poland, Romania, and Estonia. The EU’s plan, while not yet approved by member states, has already garnered support for a multi-layered “drone wall” to counter potential threats. The development of these defenses is crucial as a stronger EU defense posture could reshape the geopolitical landscape of Europe.
EU leaders will discuss and vote on the “defence roadmap” at a summit next week, with officials anticipating a swift approval process.
