Mistral AI CEO Calls for European Investment in Defence AI
The CEO of Mistral AI, Arthur Mensch, urged Europe to prioritize investment in domestically-developed artificial intelligence for defence and security applications today, warning of potential geopolitical consequences if the continent remains reliant on foreign technology.
Speaking at the Tallinn Digital Summit on 2025-10-09, Mensch stated, “it is absolutely necessary that the defence spend in artificial intelligence in Europe is directed to all-European companies.” He cautioned against depending on technology hosted on US servers, citing the risk of access being restricted or revoked. This call echoes broader concerns about digital sovereignty and the need for a secure European technological infrastructure, often referred to as the EuroStack.
Mensch emphasized the importance of European ownership of AI, stating, “This is a technology that Europe needs to own. If we don’t own it, we will become an AI colony and we will not have geopolitical power anymore.” He highlighted a recent partnership between Mistral and Helsing, a European defence tech company, focused on integrating AI models into autonomous systems like drones, asking, “How do we build, how do we embed our models and our sensor systems into drones that have enough autonomy so that they can act on the battlefield?” The increasing reliance on AI in modern warfare makes this a critical issue for national security.
The call for investment comes as US tech companies, including Meta, are offering their AI models to European governments and organizations for defence purposes, potentially challenging Mistral’s position in the market. Mensch also referenced concerns about the reliability of US support, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine and recent events involving Elon Musk’s Starlink service. Officials stated they will continue to assess the implications of these developments and explore options for bolstering European AI capabilities.
