E3 Nations Position to Support Gaza Ceasefire, Seek Role in Post-Conflict Governance
London, Paris, and Berlin are coordinating efforts to bolster support for a ceasefire in the Middle East and are seeking representation on a proposed “Board of Peace” overseeing Gaza’s transitional governance.
The “E3” – the United Kingdom, France, and Germany – intend to advocate for one of their own to serve on the board, which is envisioned to guide a Palestinian committee in the administration of Gaza. This move comes after former U.S. President Donald Trump outlined a 20-point peace plan that included himself as chair of the Board of Peace, with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair as the only other initially named member.
While acknowledging Blair’s past contributions and regular communication with UK officials, including Keir Starmer’s national security advisor Jonathan Powell, a senior British government aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated concerns about Blair’s involvement due to his role in the 2003 Iraq War. “There are issues with Blair in the eyes of other partners in the region…there will inevitably be other individuals who have backing of partners and those names have not been put forward yet,” the aide stated. The ongoing conflict has created a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as detailed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Officials suggest that the E3’s involvement is crucial for ensuring the international legitimacy of any future governance structure in Gaza, and for maintaining a unified European front on the issue. Further discussions are expected in the coming days as international pressure mounts for a resolution to the conflict; you can find more information about the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict here.
European officials stated they will continue to work with regional partners to identify suitable candidates for the Board of Peace and to facilitate a lasting ceasefire.
