FDA Official Withdraws Resignation Amid Investigation, Raising Credibility Concerns

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) top drugmaker, Dr. Habibe Tidmarsh, has informed staff he intends to fight an investigation and is reconsidering his recent resignation, a move stemming from a public dispute over a drug approval and a subsequent lawsuit.

The controversy began in September when Tidmarsh publicly questioned the clinical benefit of voclosporin, a drug manufactured by Aurinia Pharmaceuticals and approved to treat lupus nephritis, an autoimmune disease affecting the kidneys. In a LinkedIn post, Tidmarsh claimed the drug hadn’t demonstrated “hard” clinical benefit and alleged necessary trials hadn’t been conducted. Aurinia responded with a lawsuit, asserting the drug underwent a full FDA approval process utilizing a validated endpoint known to predict clinical outcomes and has been approved in 36 countries worldwide, including the United States. The company claims its share price dropped 20 percent, resulting in a $350 million market value loss, following Tidmarsh’s initial post.

Yesterday, Tidmarsh initially offered his resignation, but pharmaceutical industry publication Endpoints News reported today that he has reversed course. The unfolding situation has sparked concern within the biotech industry, with some investors questioning the agency’s stability. “We are witnessing nothing less than a clown show at FDA right now,” one venture capital investor told Stat News. “For the sake of patients, we need a stable and consistent FDA!” A portfolio manager at a large biotech fund added, “What’s happening at the top of the FDA is embarrassing.”

This internal turmoil at the FDA comes at a critical time, potentially impacting future drug approvals and investor confidence in the pharmaceutical sector. The FDA is currently investigating Tidmarsh’s actions, and agency officials have not yet commented on the reversal of his resignation or the ongoing investigation.
