No. 6 Monmouth Defeats New Hampshire, Remains Undefeated in CAA Play

No. 6-ranked Monmouth University defeated New Hampshire 38-21 today at Kessler Stadium in West Long Branch, N.J., maintaining their undefeated record in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play and bolstering their playoff hopes.

Despite the absence of star quarterback Derek Robertson due to a non-throwing hand and wrist injury, the Hawks (9-1 overall, 6-0 CAA) showcased a dominant rushing attack led by running back Rodney Nelson, who broke a program record with his sixth consecutive 100-yard game, finishing with 244 yards and two touchdowns. Redshirt freshman Frankie Weaver stepped in at quarterback, completing 15 of 20 passes for 233 yards. Nelson’s performance earned him CAA and National Offensive Player of the Week honors. This victory is crucial as the team aims for a top seed in the upcoming FCS Playoffs.

New Hampshire (5-5, 3-3 CAA) struggled to contain Monmouth’s offense, despite limiting CAA opponents to an average of just 172.3 passing yards per game – second best in the conference. The Wildcats, coming off a bye week after a win against William & Mary, were unable to overcome the Hawks’ balanced attack. Robertson, a Walter Payton Award candidate, was also named the Chick Boone Leadership Award winner this week, demonstrating his impact on the program extends beyond the field. The Hawks are currently ranked No. 6 in both the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll and the Stats Perform FCS Top 25.

Monmouth will await their seeding for the 2025 FCS Playoffs, which begin on November 29, with the championship game scheduled for January 5, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee.
