Obsessive Focus: Key to Billionaire Success, Business Coach Claims
A relentless, almost uncomfortable obsession with one’s work is a common trait among the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, according to business coach and former Wall Streeter Codie Sanchez.
Sanchez, who has interviewed nearly a dozen billionaires for her podcast BigDeal, including Palantir cofounder Joe Lonsdale, says that despite their diverse backgrounds, they all share this singular characteristic. “That’s it. That’s the secret,” Sanchez stated, adding that obsession goes beyond mere curiosity and fuels the relentless action needed to overcome obstacles. This insight comes as more people explore alternative paths to wealth creation, like small business ownership.
She explains that obsession means “thinking nonstop until your relentless action makes it unreasonable for you to not win,” emphasizing that “quantity overwhelms failure. Repetition steers fate.” Examples abound: Mark Cuban worked seven years without a vacation while building his first business, eventually selling it for $7 million, and Jeff Bezos famously worked 12-hour days, seven days a week, in Amazon’s early years. Steve Jobs, Apple’s cofounder, was also known for his intense dedication, often immersing himself directly in the details of projects. For those interested in learning more about entrepreneurial success, resources like the SCORE Association offer guidance and mentorship.
While sustained dedication is crucial, Sanchez notes that significant results can be achieved within a shorter timeframe. “What is shocking to me is what can happen with three to five years of absolute dedication,” she said. “If you make that 10 years, that’s where billionaires start to land.” Sanchez herself built a media and finance education company, Contrarian Thinking, and has an estimated net worth of $17 million after a career that began in journalism, where she won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.
Sanchez indicated that continued research into the habits of high-achievers will be a focus of her ongoing work with entrepreneurs and investors.
