PARIS – France’s top military official, General Fabien Mandon, has sparked controversy after stating the country must be prepared for potential casualties, including the loss of life among its youth, should a war with Russia erupt. The remarks have drawn sharp criticism from across the French political spectrum, with some accusing the defense chief of warmongering.

The statement, delivered by General Mandon – appointed Chief of the Defence Staff in September – came during an annual gathering of mayors in Paris on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. He urged officials to prepare citizens for the possibility of hardship, stating, “To protect our identity,” according to reports.

General Mandon previously suggested France could be at war with Russia as early as 2028, arguing that while the nation possesses the economic and demographic strength to counter Moscow, it lacks the necessary mental fortitude.

“We have all the knowledge, all the economic and demographic strength to counter the Moscow regime,” Mandon said.

“However, if France is not prepared to accept the loss of its children, to suffer economically because priority will be given to defense production, then we are at risk,” he continued.

According to Politico, the November 21, 2024, comments from General Mandon have triggered a strong backlash from across the French political landscape. Fabien Roussel, leader of the Communist Party, accused him of employing “unbearable war rhetoric” and labeled the general a “war agitator.” The development underscores growing concerns within France regarding the potential for escalating conflict with Russia.
