Omaha Braces for Sub-Zero Wind Chills This Weekend

A significant cold front is expected to bring frigid temperatures and dangerously low wind chills to the Omaha region starting Saturday evening and lasting through Monday morning.

Temperatures will plummet to between 19 and 24 degrees Fahrenheit Saturday night, with wind chills dropping to around 10 degrees. The cold air will move in Saturday evening, potentially turning any lingering rain into snow flurries, though no accumulation is anticipated. Sunday will be mostly sunny but remain very chilly, with highs only reaching the mid-30s. Residents are advised to protect vulnerable infrastructure, as freezing temperatures can cause burst pipes and other damage; learn more about winter safety preparedness from the Red Cross.

Travel conditions could be hazardous, particularly overnight Saturday, with potentially wet roads across the Omaha area and icy patches in northwest Iowa. Any standing water is likely to freeze by Sunday morning. While conditions are expected to improve, the National Weather Service warns that these conditions can create dangerous driving situations. For updated road conditions, check the Nebraska Department of Transportation website.

Fortunately, warmer weather is on the horizon. Temperatures will begin to rise on Monday, with highs in the mid-40s, and are forecast to reach the 50s and 60s by Tuesday and Wednesday. The next chance for precipitation is expected around Saturday of next week.

Officials urge residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their property during the cold snap and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
