WNBA Champion Dana Evans to Receive Key to the City of Gary

Two-time WNBA champion Dana Evans will be honored today with the key to the city of Gary, Indiana, in recognition of her achievements in professional basketball.

The ceremony will take place at 2:15 p.m. at the West Side Leadership Academy, located at 900 Gerry St., and is co-hosted by the Gary Community School Corp. Mayor Eddie Melton will present Evans with the key. Evans, a 2017 graduate of West Side and a McDonald’s All-American, continued her basketball career at the University of Louisville before being selected 13th overall in the 2021 WNBA draft.

Evans secured her first WNBA championship as a rookie with the Chicago Sky. Earlier this year, she was traded to the Las Vegas Aces, where she recently contributed to their championship victory over the Phoenix Mercury, scoring 21 points in the first game of the series. This recognition highlights the impact of successful athletes on inspiring youth in their hometowns.

Free tickets to attend the presentation are available on Eventbrite. Fans can also learn more about the WNBA and its players.

City officials stated they hope the event will serve as an inspiration to aspiring athletes in the Gary community.
