Gene Hackman’s Santa Fe Estate Listed for $6.25 Million Following Deaths

The former residence of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa Hackman, has officially entered the market in Santa Fe, New Mexico, nearly a year after their passing. The 13,004-square-foot property is listed for $6.25 million and is being marketed by Sotheby’s International Realty, with real estate agents Tara S. Earley and Ricky Allen handling the sale.

The home, built in 1997, features five bedrooms and ten bathrooms, along with a formal living room, a large dining area, and a library. Additional amenities include a gym, game room, and media room on the lower level. The estate also boasts a separate three-bedroom guest house, as well as another building that could function as an art studio, yoga space, or music studio – or a second guest house.

The listing comes after authorities investigated the deaths of Hackman and his wife. According to a search warrant affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital, Betsy was found to be in a state of decomposition with facial swelling and mummified extremities, and Hackman exhibited similar signs of decay. Investigators ultimately ruled out foul play and the possibility of death by gas leak.

Authorities later determined that Betsy died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, and that she was alive as recently as February 12th. Dr. Heather Jarrell, the chief medical investigator, explained that hantavirus is characterized by “flu-like symptoms including fever, muscle aches, cough, sometimes vomiting and diarrhea, that can progress to shortness of breath, cardiac or heart failure and pulmonary failure.” Gene Hackman’s death was attributed to hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributing factor. He is believed to have passed away around February 18th, based on the last recorded activity on his pacemaker.

The property also includes several outdoor spaces, including a swimming pool, enclosed hot tub, a private putting green, and a six-car garage. “The Hackmans embraced Santa Fe, and Santa Fe embraced them,” Earley told the Wall Street Journal. “You’d see them in town, and they weren’t viewed as celebrities. (They) would just walk into Artisan shops and buy his supplies.”

The actor, who began his career on stage and in small television roles in 1958, rose to prominence with his performance in 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde, earning his first Academy Award nomination. He went on to win two Oscars for his roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven, and starred in numerous films including Superman, Mississippi Burning, and The Royal Tenenbaums.

Gene Hackman was 95 years old at the time of his death, while his wife was 63. The estate’s listing reflects a unique opportunity to own a piece of Hollywood history in a location cherished by the couple. The property’s expansive grounds and versatile buildings offer a blend of privacy and functionality, appealing to a range of potential buyers.
