Google Meet Launches AI-Powered Makeup Filter
Google Meet users can now utilize an artificial intelligence-powered makeup filter during video calls, offering a quick alternative to applying physical makeup before meetings.
The new feature, which began rolling out yesterday, October 13, 2025, provides 12 different makeup styles accessible through the “Appearance” section within the existing “Portrait touch-up” settings – a suite of features introduced in 2023 that includes complexion smoothing and eye adjustments. Google emphasizes the filter’s stability, stating it will remain accurately positioned on the user’s face even with movement, such as drinking or turning the head. This addresses a common issue with previous virtual makeup features on other platforms.
Users will find the feature disabled by default, requiring active selection either before or during a call; once chosen, Google Meet will retain the user’s preferred style for subsequent meetings. The addition of virtual makeup aims to enhance user experience and provide a level of personalization increasingly common in video conferencing, as detailed in recent reports on video conferencing trends.
This update positions Google Meet more competitively with rivals like Microsoft Teams and Zoom, which already offer similar virtual appearance tools. The increasing demand for polished, professional appearances in remote work environments is driving this trend.
Google officials stated they will continue to monitor user feedback and explore additional enhancements to the “Portrait touch-up” suite in the coming months.
Google Meet finally has an AI-powered makeup filter for those days when you don’t feel like applying real makeup before a meeting. The new capability will help Google Meet compete with other video-conferencing apps that already have virtual makeup features, including Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
Google Meet offers 12 different makeup options to choose from, which can be found in the “Appearance” section under “Portrait touch-up,” which is a feature that has been available since 2023 to provide users with options like complexion smoothing, under-eye lightening, and eye whitening.
Notably, Google says that the virtual makeup will stay in place no matter how the user moves on-screen, making it seem more authentic. So, if a user takes a sip of coffee, the filter will stay on their face instead of shifting to the mug.
Additionally, the feature will be disabled by default and can be activated by the user either before or during a video call. Once a makeup style is applied, Google Meet will remember your choices for future meetings.
The new AI-powered feature began rolling out on October 8 on mobile and web.
