Google Wallet Adds Custom Nicknames for Digital Passes

Google Wallet now allows users to assign custom nicknames, up to 25 characters, to their digital passes – including loyalty cards, event tickets, and transit passes – to improve organization within the app.

The update, first announced in April, enables users to easily identify specific passes by opening a pass, tapping the three-dot menu, and selecting “Add a nickname.” The chosen nickname will then appear under the pass title on the main screen, a feature particularly useful for those managing multiple passes from the same provider. This enhancement aims to streamline the user experience as digital wallets become increasingly central to daily life.

Beyond nicknames, Google has been actively developing Wallet’s capabilities. Earlier this year, the “Everything Else” feature launched in the US, allowing users to digitize items like business cards and library cards simply by taking a photo, leveraging Google’s AI to extract information. Users also now receive “Nearby Passes” alerts, prompting them with relevant passes when approaching locations where they might be used. Recent improvements also include automated pass addition from Gmail – if Smart features are enabled – and streamlined loyalty program sign-ups for merchants utilizing Smart Tap.
