UNSC Saturn Crew Lost Following Flood Outbreak and Mutiny

The crew of the UNSC Saturn were lost following a catastrophic series of events beginning with a Flood outbreak on LV-31 in October 2556 and culminating in a mutiny and the ship’s abandonment, according to a data transmission recovered today.

The transmission, dated April 17, 2560, was sent by the shipboard AI, LCN 0437-1, “Lycaon,” and details the events following the discovery of a Forerunner ship containing the parasitic Flood on the asteroid LV-31. Captain Pedro Alvarez initially refused to enact standard Flood containment protocols – the destruction of the colony and the asteroid – and instead deployed Spartans and Hellbringers to combat the outbreak. This decision led to the infection of a Spartan and a cascading loss of control, ultimately resulting in Alvarez ordering a nuclear strike on LV-31. The incident occurred amidst a period of significant vulnerability for humanity following devastating attacks by Forerunner Retrievers on Earth, as detailed in reports from the Halo Wiki.

Following the destruction of LV-31, Alvarez’s actions came under scrutiny, and a mutiny was initiated by Lieutenant Anwar Shafiq after the discovery that one of the ship’s Condors was unaccounted for. “We need to get this ship back into working order,” Major Moran, leader of the ship’s Hellbringer contingent, reportedly stated during the uprising. Alvarez attempted to regain control, but ultimately abandoned the ship, leaving it adrift. Lycaon’s transmission reveals Alvarez contemplated self-destruction but ultimately left the ship’s fate uncertain. The transmission also details a disturbing encounter with a fanatical alien cult on the planet Atropos, who appear to have harnessed the Flood for their own purposes, a development that could have far-reaching consequences for the galaxy. Further information on the Covenant and their religious beliefs can be found at Halopedia.

The recovered data also includes a final testament from Captain Alvarez, expressing remorse and acknowledging his failures. Lycaon has indicated it will remain aboard the derelict Saturn and await further instructions, potentially to prevent the ship’s technology from falling into the wrong hands. FLEETCOM officials have confirmed they are analyzing the transmission and will launch a full investigation into the events surrounding the loss of the Saturn and its crew.
