Heavy snowfall is forecast for parts of the Western Alps, prompting weather warnings for affected areas.

Bozen – A period of calm weather had settled over the Alps, with only persistent fog occasionally drifting through the mountain range between Munich and Verona. Recently, the sun has dominated the higher elevations, bringing clear, alpine weather. However, a shift in the atmosphere is now underway, originating not from the north but from the south.

Weather Warning Issued for Parts of the Alps: Up to 50 Centimeters of Snow Possible

Atlantic air moving from the northwest is bringing precipitation, particularly to Piedmont and parts of Liguria. Italian authorities have already issued warnings, as reported on December 17, 2025. The Italian Civil Protection agency stated that snowfall is expected above 400 to 600 meters in southern Piedmont and western Liguria starting early Tuesday, December 16th. The snow line is forecast to rise above 1,000 to 1,200 meters during the afternoon, accompanied by moderate to heavy snowfall.”

According to the newspaper rainews, heavy snowfall was particularly impacting Prato Nevoso, a ski resort in the Ligurian Alps. The incoming weather system is significant as the holiday season approaches, with many tourists planning to visit the Italian Alps for skiing.

Winter Arrives in the Alps: “Abundant Snowfall”

“The low-pressure system is also bringing abundant snowfall to the Western Alps,” rainews continued. Up to 50 centimeters of new snow are possible above 1,500 meters. Between 1,000 and 1,500 meters, 20 to 30 centimeters of snow are also expected.
