Israel, Hamas Reach Deal for Hostage Release After Two Years

A deal has been reached between Israel and Hamas for the phased release of remaining living hostages held in Gaza, marking a potential turning point after nearly two years of captivity and intense negotiations.

The announcement, made by US President Donald Trump earlier today, sparked emotional celebrations among families of hostages gathered at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv, where weekly rallies have been held demanding their return. Some attendees chanted “Nobel Prize to Trump” and vowed to continue advocating for the return of those hostages confirmed deceased. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum expressed both excitement and apprehension, stating, “This is an important and significant step toward bringing everyone home,” but emphasized their struggle would continue until all hostages are released.

Freed hostages also shared their relief, with Omer Wenkert posting on Instagram, “Thank God, it finally happened! Avia and Guy [Evyatar David and Guy Gilboa Dalal, who were held with him in captivity], I’m waiting for you.” Silvia Cunio, mother of hostages David and Ariel, spoke through tears, expressing her longing for their return. This agreement comes after months of mediation efforts, primarily led by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, to secure the release of hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attacks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement saying, “With God’s help, we will bring them all home,” and announced he would convene the government to approve the agreement. President Isaac Herzog echoed this sentiment, stating, “All of Israel stands with the hostages.” The deal involves the release of 48 hostages currently held by terror groups in Gaza, including those abducted during the October 7th attacks and an IDF soldier held since 2014. The Israel Defense Forces confirmed they are prepared to execute the terms of the agreement.

Officials indicated the first phase of the release is expected to begin on Monday, and further details regarding the implementation of the agreement will be announced following the government’s approval.
