Israel Receives Coffins Containing Remains of Hostages from Hamas
Israel received two coffins via the Red Cross today containing what Hamas claims are the bodies of deceased Israeli hostages Amiram Cooper and Sahar Baruch, according to the Israeli prime minister’s office.
Israeli forces will transfer the remains to the National Centre of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv for identification. This exchange follows accusations yesterday that Hamas violated the current ceasefire agreement by presenting remains falsely identified as belonging to Ofir Tzarfati, a hostage previously recovered by Israeli forces. The International Committee of the Red Cross stated its staff were unaware the body bag had been moved prior to their arrival, calling the staged recovery “unacceptable.”
Hamas’s armed wing announced the recovery of Cooper and Baruch’s bodies earlier today, but rejected allegations of deception, accusing Israel of fabricating “false pretexts” for potential further aggression. The accusations of a prior violation stemmed from drone footage released by the Israeli military appearing to show Hamas members reburying a body bag before presenting it to Red Cross staff. This latest development casts further doubt on the fragile truce and the ongoing negotiations for the return of all hostages.
Under the terms of the agreement brokered by the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, Hamas committed to returning 20 living and 28 deceased hostages. To date, Israel has released the bodies of 195 Palestinians in exchange for the remains of 13 Israeli hostages, as well as two foreign nationals. Eleven Israeli citizens, one Tanzanian, and one Thai national remain unaccounted for. Read more about the history of the conflict here.
Israeli officials stated they will continue to work towards the full accounting of all hostages and will respond to any further violations of the ceasefire agreement.
