Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has begun serving a 27-year prison sentence for attempting to subvert the country’s democratic process, Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday, November 25th. The ruling comes after all of Bolsonaro’s appeals were rejected.
Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2022, concluded his political career by being incarcerated in a modest room at police headquarters. The room is equipped with a television, a mini-refrigerator, and air conditioning.
The former president, 70, was convicted in September for plotting to prevent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from assuming the presidency following the 2022 election, a scheme that reportedly included plans to assassinate the veteran leftist leader.

Brazilian prosecutors stated the coup attempt failed due to a lack of support from key military figures. Bolsonaro maintains his innocence, claiming he is the victim of political persecution.
Earlier this month, the Brazilian Supreme Court denied Bolsonaro’s final appeal. In a statement released Wednesday, November 26th, the court affirmed the decision was final.
The Supreme Court also ordered a military court on Tuesday, November 25th, to determine whether Bolsonaro should be stripped of his rank as an army captain.
Bolsonaro was under house arrest until Saturday, November 22nd, when he was transferred to police headquarters in Brasilia after allegedly tampering with his ankle monitor. He claimed he damaged the device out of “curiosity.”
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes indicated there were signs Bolsonaro was planning to flee the country during a prayer gathering organized by his son outside his residence. Moraes pointed to the proximity of the U.S. Embassy and Bolsonaro’s close relationship with former President Donald Trump, suggesting a possible attempt to seek political asylum.
Bolsonaro stated he acted due to “paranoia” induced by medication he was taking, and denied any intention of fleeing.
The Brazilian Supreme Court ruled that Bolsonaro will remain detained in a secure room – a protected space for prisoners – at the police headquarters in Brasilia.
Five other defendants in the same case as Bolsonaro, including military generals and former ministers, also began serving their prison sentences – ranging from 19 to 26 years – on Tuesday, November 25th.
Alexandre Ramagem, Bolsonaro’s former intelligence chief, who was sentenced to 16 years in prison, has been declared a fugitive after recently fleeing to the United States.
