Eagles Cornerback Jaire Alexander Steps Away From Football
Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Jaire Alexander has decided to pause his football career to prioritize his physical and mental well-being as he continues recovery from offseason knee surgery.
Alexander, 28, informed the Eagles of his decision today, November 12, 2025, following yesterday’s victory over the Green Bay Packers. He did not accompany the team to Green Bay for the game. The move comes after Alexander was recently acquired by the Eagles in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens, sending a 2026 sixth-round pick to Baltimore in exchange for Alexander and a 2027 seventh-round pick.
The Eagles had indicated that Alexander remaining in Philadelphia was part of a pre-arranged plan to support both his knee rehabilitation and his integration into the team’s defensive scheme. Despite a challenging start to the season, appearing in only two games for the Ravens, Alexander stated last week that he was feeling better than he had all year. General Manager Howie Roseman acknowledged the risk involved in the trade, stating, “I think when you talk about [him] still [being] a young guy, knowing where his health is at now, feeling healthy, feeling good, we felt like the risk was worth the reward with him.” Alexander is a two-time Pro Bowler and was named an All-Pro in both 2020 and 2022, previously spending seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers before his release in June; you can find more information about player performance metrics at Pro-Football-Reference.
This decision potentially impacts the Eagles’ secondary depth as they navigate the remainder of the season and the playoffs. The team has stated they will continue to support Alexander throughout this process and will re-evaluate his status as his recovery progresses; for more on NFL player health and safety initiatives, visit the NFL’s Player Health and Safety page.
