Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone Developing Miss Piggy Movie

Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence revealed today that she is producing a solo film centered around the iconic Muppet character, Miss Piggy, with Emma Stone also heavily involved in the project.

The idea for the film sparked during the COVID-19 lockdowns, with Lawrence noting a conversation about the potential for a “cancel culture” storyline involving the character. “Miss Piggy is a feminist icon, and [a friend] said it would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled,” Lawrence recalled on The Tonight Show. “Now, that is not the plot, necessarily, but it got the wheels turning.”

Stone, whom Lawrence described as “the Muppet-head” and “a shark,” is collaborating with Tony Award-winning writer Cole Escola on the script. Lawrence clarified her role, stating, “I’m, just like, the ideas guy.” Both Lawrence and Stone reportedly hope to appear in the film, marking Miss Piggy’s first solo outing since her debut on The Muppet Show in 1976. This project arrives as The Muppets celebrate their 70th anniversary and prepare for a Disney+ refresh of The Muppet Show, set to premiere in 2026.

The development of a Miss Piggy feature film highlights the enduring popularity of The Muppets and their continued relevance in contemporary culture. Escola is currently writing the script, and further details regarding production and release are expected to be announced in the coming months.
