Jim Caviezel Will Not Reprise Role of Jesus in Mel Gibson’s ‘Resurrection’ Films

Jim Caviezel, who powerfully portrayed Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s 2004 film The Passion of the Christ, will not return for the director’s upcoming two-part sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ.

Lionsgate is scheduled to release the films theatrically, with Part One arriving on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and Part Two debuting May 6, 2027, to coincide with Ascension Day. Production is slated to begin soon in Rome, and will require recasting for key roles, including the part of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, previously played by Monica Bellucci. This marks a significant shift for the highly anticipated project, which aims to continue the story following Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion.

The Passion of the Christ was a global box office phenomenon, earning over $600 million worldwide and, for many years, holding the record as the highest-grossing R-rated film domestically with $370 million. Caviezel himself had indicated a willingness to return, stating in an April interview on the Arroyo Grande podcast, “It takes a while to make these things, but it takes the right time, and only God knows that… Am I scared? Yes, but if I wasn’t, I wouldn’t want to work with that actor because you’re not ready.” The original film sparked considerable discussion regarding its depiction of violence, as noted in The Hollywood Reporter’s 2004 review.

The recasting comes after nearly a decade of development for the sequel, and may signal a new creative direction for the project. Gibson is producing the films alongside Icon Production partner Bruce Davey, and officials have not yet commented on the reasons behind the decision or potential replacements for the lead roles.
