Jimmy Kimmel Addresses Disney Controversy, Future of Late Night
Jimmy Kimmel addressed the recent controversy surrounding comments made on his show and discussed the future leadership of Disney, as well as his own show’s longevity, in his first extensive interview since the events unfolded.
Speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime event yesterday, Kimmel described the fallout from his remarks as a “distortion” by right-wing news networks, but acknowledged his own initial reaction. He credited Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Dana Walden with helping to navigate the situation following the temporary removal of Jimmy Kimmel Live! from the air. “I ruined Dana’s weekend,” Kimmel said, “But I don’t think the result…would have been as positive if I hadn’t talked to Dana as much as I did.”
Kimmel also expressed strong support for Walden to become the next CEO of Disney, stating, “I happen to love Dana Walden very much, and I think she’s done a great job.” He further revealed that the annual budget for late-night shows like his is approximately $120 million, a figure he believes is unnecessarily high, and suggested alternative, more cost-effective models. The debate over the financial viability of late-night television comes as viewership continues to shift towards streaming and digital platforms. Kimmel also stated he would “love to have Trump on the show, for sure.”
Despite regularly addressing his future with the show during contract negotiations, Kimmel declined to comment on whether he would continue beyond his current deal, which expires next year. He noted a pattern of predicting his departure only to renew his contract, a cycle he now avoids to prevent upsetting his staff. Kimmel did acknowledge the show’s success on YouTube, despite the financial imbalance between the platform and ABC.
Disney officials have not yet commented on Kimmel’s remarks regarding Walden’s potential CEO candidacy, but have stated they are pleased with the resolution of the recent controversy and remain committed to a positive working relationship with Kimmel.
