Pyongyang –
Kim Ju Ae, the daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has made her first public visit to the mausoleum housing the remains of her grandfather and great-grandfather, the former leaders of North Korea. The visit, which took place on Friday, January 2, 2026, according to state media, is being interpreted as a significant step in positioning her as a potential successor.
The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Jong Un visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun accompanied by high-ranking officials, with his daughter, Ju Ae, also present.
South Korean intelligence officials stated last year that Ju Ae appears to understand she is being groomed to eventually take over leadership of the isolated nation, following her accompaniment of her father on a key visit to Beijing.

Ju Ae was publicly introduced in 2022 during her father’s attendance at an intercontinental ballistic missile launch.
North Korean state media has since referred to her as the “beloved child” and a “great guiding star” – or “hyangdo” in Korean – a title traditionally reserved for the country’s supreme leaders and their designated heirs. This latest move further solidifies her growing prominence within the regime.
The Kim family has ruled North Korea for decades, and a pervasive personality cult surrounding the “Paektu bloodline” dominates daily life in the reclusive state. The development underscores the continuation of dynastic rule in the country.
Kim Jong Un is the third in a succession of leaders to govern the world’s only communist monarchy, following his father, Kim Jong Il, and his grandfather, Kim Il Sung.
Both men, lauded as “eternal leaders” in state propaganda, are interred at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, a grand mausoleum in central Pyongyang.
