Severe Flooding Displaces Thousands in Northern India

New Delhi, India – Torrential monsoon rains have caused widespread and devastating flooding across several districts in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, displacing over 50,000 people as of today, October 11, 2025, at 23:09:00.

The hardest-hit areas include the districts of Chamoli, Uttarkashi, and Pauri Garhwal, where rivers have breached their banks, submerging villages and damaging infrastructure. Authorities have confirmed at least 20 fatalities, with fears the number will rise as rescue operations continue and access to remote areas improves. “We are facing an unprecedented situation,” stated Uttarakhand Chief Secretary R.K. Sudhanshu in a press conference earlier today. “Our priority is to evacuate those stranded and provide them with essential supplies.”

The Indian Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are working alongside local authorities to airlift stranded residents and deliver food, water, and medical aid. Roads have been washed away in many locations, hindering rescue efforts and complicating the delivery of assistance. The current flooding is exacerbating existing concerns about the impact of climate change on monsoon patterns in the region, leading to more frequent and intense extreme weather events.

Shelters have been set up in schools and community centers to accommodate the displaced, but officials warn that capacity is becoming strained. The state government has announced financial assistance for those who have lost their homes and livelihoods, and is assessing the extent of the damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and power lines. You can find more information about disaster preparedness on the National Disaster Management Authority website.

Rescue and relief operations are expected to continue for several days, with authorities closely monitoring the weather forecast for any further rainfall. Officials are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow evacuation orders.
