Lostprophets Singer Ian Watkins Dies in Prison at 48

Ian Watkins, the former lead singer of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets, has died at the age of 48 following an assault while serving a 29-year prison sentence, authorities confirmed today.

Watkins was found dead at HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire on Saturday morning after prison staff responded to reports of an assault on an inmate. West Yorkshire Police have launched a homicide investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Details of the attack remain limited, though reports suggest Watkins sustained serious injuries.

Watkins was convicted in December 2013 of multiple counts of sexual offenses, including crimes against children and infants. During the trial, prosecutors revealed disturbing evidence of Watkins’ actions, with a judge stating the charges “plumbed new depths of depravity.” He was previously attacked at the same prison in August 2023, suffering neck injuries that required hospitalization. HMP Wakefield, often referred to as the “Monster Mansion,” houses some of the United Kingdom’s most dangerous offenders, including serial killers and other violent criminals. The musician formed Lostprophets in 2000, achieving international success with albums like Weapons and hit singles such as “Last Train Home.” His arrest in 2012, stemming from a police search warrant executed at his home in Pontypridd, brought a sudden end to the band’s career and led to a significant conversation about abuse within the music industry. Lostprophets disbanded following Watkins’ conviction.

Police detectives from the homicide and major inquiry team are continuing their investigation, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
