Israel Conducts Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon, Killing One
Israel carried out intense airstrikes in southern Lebanon early today, resulting in one fatality and injuries to seven others, while also temporarily disrupting a key transportation route.
The pre-dawn strikes targeted the village of Msayleh, hitting a facility storing heavy machinery and causing extensive damage to numerous vehicles. A vehicle transporting vegetables was also struck during the attack, killing one Syrian citizen and wounding another, according to reports from Al-Manar TV. The Lebanese Health Ministry later confirmed that six Lebanese citizens, including two women, were also injured.
The Israeli military stated the strikes were aimed at infrastructure intended for use by Hezbollah, accusing the group of attempting to rebuild its capabilities following the conclusion of a 14-month conflict in late November. This ongoing exchange of fire raises concerns about a potential escalation of hostilities in the region, particularly as tensions remain high following the recent UN Security Council discussions regarding Lebanon’s stability. Since the ceasefire, Israel has conducted near-daily airstrikes, resulting in dozens of deaths.
Earlier this month, U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk called for renewed efforts to achieve a lasting end to hostilities in Lebanon, noting that at least 103 civilians had been verified killed in Lebanon since the ceasefire. The most recent war, which began after the October 8, 2023 rocket fire from Hezbollah following the Hamas incursion into Israel, caused widespread destruction and an estimated $11 billion in damage, according to the World Bank.
Officials have indicated that Israel will continue to monitor and respond to perceived threats from Hezbollah, and further airstrikes are possible.
