Marathon Player Count Drops After Strong Launch – Is Bungie’s New FPS Doomed?

Bungie’s recently concluded “Server Slam” event for Marathon drew over 143,000 players within its first 24 hours, exceeding the initial player counts of titles like Battlefield 6, Call of Duty, Escape from Tarkov, and Destiny 2. The event was designed to stress-test servers ahead of the game’s full launch.

However, player numbers began to decline rapidly after the initial surge. Approximately 30,000 players dropped off within six hours of launch, and by the following day, the player base had halved. Despite expectations for continued growth over the weekend, the downward trend persisted, with a peak of 64,128 players recorded in the last 24 hours as of today, March 2, 2026. This initial drop in engagement raises questions about the game’s long-term prospects, particularly given its planned $40 price point.

Similar patterns emerged on Twitch, where the game initially peaked at around 300,000 viewers. Streamer efforts briefly pushed viewership to a high of 350,000, but as of today, March 2, 2026, concurrent viewers have fallen to 13.3K. The launch of Marathon is being closely watched as a test case for new engagement models in the competitive first-person shooter market.

Further analysis and first impressions of the game are forthcoming after a more extensive weekend playtest.
