The congresswoman, a prominent voice on the right since taking office in 2021, cited a growing sense of alienation in Washington and disagreements over policy as key factors in her decision [1]. Greene,a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in Business Administration [3], outlined her rationale in a public statement, signaling a departure from the political arena after a relatively short but impactful tenure.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a prominent conservative voice in Congress, announced Friday she will resign from her seat in January 2026. The decision comes after a period of increasing friction with former President Donald Trump and a growing sense of alienation within Washington, D.C.

“I will be resigning from my position, with my last day being January 5, 2026,” Greene wrote in a lengthy statement posted on social media. The move marks a significant shift for the Georgia congresswoman, who has been a staunch ally of Trump’s for years.

Greene cited a series of disappointments, both within Congress, from fellow Republicans, and from Trump himself, as contributing factors to her decision. “I have always been ostracized in Washington D.C., and I simply never fit in,” she stated.

The resignation follows months of public disagreements with Trump, stemming from Greene’s criticism of his stance on the release of Jeffrey Epstein case files, as well as his foreign policy and healthcare positions. This split underscores the fracturing dynamics within the Republican party.

Last week, Trump lashed out at the congresswoman, labeling her everything from a “lunatic screamer” to a traitor. “Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Greene is a disgrace to our GREAT REPUBLICAN PARTY!” the former president wrote in a lengthy post withdrawing his support.

Trump accused the Georgia Republican of moving “very far left” and of simply “COMPLAINING, COMPLAINING, COMPLAINING” about his administration.

“Defending American women who were raped at 14 years old, trafficked, and used by rich and powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the resident of the United States, for whom I fought,” she said Friday in her announcement.

In her video, she emphasized her loyalty to Trump, except on certain issues, and said it was “unfair and incorrect” for him to attack her for disagreeing with him.

“Loyalty should be reciprocal, and we should be able to vote according to our conscience and represent the interests of our district, because our job title is literally ‘representative’,” Greene highlighted.

Criticism of Bipartisanship and the “MAGA Corporation”

Greene stated in her declaration that “America First should mean that and only that, without any other foreign country being added to America first in the halls of our government.”

In her view, “Americans are used by the political industrial complex of both parties, election after election, to be able to choose any side that can convince Americans to hate the other side more.”

“No matter which way the pendulum swings, Republican or Democrat, nothing improves for the common men and women of the United States,” she added.

“I have a lot of self-respect and dignity, I love my family very much, and I don’t want to see my beloved district have to endure a painful and hateful primary against me by the president for whom we all fought, just to win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterm elections,” she explained in outlining her decision to resign.

“If I am sidelined by the MAGA Corporation and replaced by the neocons, big pharma and tech, the military industrial war complex, foreign leaders and the elite donors who have nothing to do with the real Americans, then the common people will have been sidelined as well,” she warned.

She also issued an enigmatic proclamation. “When Americans realize and understand that both parties are destroying our country, that no elected leader like me is able to stop the machinery of Washington from gradually destroying the country, and that instead the reality is that the people hold the real power over Washington, then I will be here with them to rebuild it.”

“Until then,” Greene said. “I will return to the people I love, to live life to the fullest as I always have and seeking a new path forward.”

Criticism of Congressional Republicans

Greene also listed several disappointments regarding what she claims were decisions by the party machinery in Congress that sidelined her initiatives, “which reflected President Trump’s executive orders,” such as a new census, making English the official language of the country, eliminating sales taxes on homes, or eliminating H1B visas.

“That’s how it is for most members of Congress’ bills, the majority leader never brings them to the floor for a vote,” she said, in what amounts to a harsh attack on House Majority Leader Mike Johnson.

She also questioned that after nearly a year of the current Republican majority legislature, it has been marginalized. “We lasted eight weeks of government shutdown with the House not working, and we are entering election season, which means all the courage is absent and only safe campaign mode for reelection is present.”
