Massimo Lombardo’s future with Servette FC is currently under review, with speculation mounting that the long-time academy manager could be set for a new role within the club.
Lombardo, a former Swiss international who played over 300 games in the Swiss Super League, has been a key figure at Servette since taking over as academy manager in July 2019. Recent reports indicate his position may be expanding to encompass a broader technical director role overseeing all aspects of the club’s football operations, from the first team down to the youth levels.
The former midfielder began his playing career at AC Bellinzona in 1990 and enjoyed a successful spell at Grasshopper Club Zürich, where he played for five seasons. He also had stints with AC Perugia, FC Lugano, Lausanne-Sports, and Neuchâtel Xamax FC, before finishing his career with FC Stade Nyonnais in 2009. Lombardo also earned 15 caps for the Swiss national team.
Since transitioning to coaching, Lombardo has held various roles, including positions with Nyon, Servette FC’s youth setup, and the Swiss national youth teams. He served as an assistant coach at FC Basel from 2017 to 2019 before returning to Servette. His average tenure as a coach is 1.66 years.
The potential appointment as Technical Director would recognize Lombardo’s significant contributions to developing young talent at Servette, a key objective for the club’s leadership. He has demonstrated an ability to inspire and guide players, improving the pathway for promising youngsters to break into the first team. The move would spot him take on a more comprehensive role in shaping the club’s long-term football strategy.
“It is an honor and a great responsibility to take on the role of Technical Director of Servette FC,” Lombardo stated, according to the club. “I have a deep affection for this club and am determined to work closely with all technical staff, players and supporters to reach new heights.”
