Meta Acquires AI-Powered Necklace Developer Limitless

Zuckerberg Reportedly Pursued Top Talent as Part of Deal

Meta has confirmed its acquisition of Limitless, a Denver-based startup specializing in artificial intelligence-powered wearable technology. The company’s core product is a necklace designed to record and summarize conversations and meetings using AI. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A Meta spokesperson confirmed the purchase, stating, “We are excited to have the Limitless team join Meta to help accelerate our pace of developing AI-powered devices.”

The move underscores Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s commitment to artificial intelligence, with a stated goal of achieving “superintelligence.” Meta has been integrating AI into its existing applications, including Facebook and Instagram, and is also leveraging the technology to enhance the capabilities of smart glasses developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica.

Limitless founder and CEO Dan Siroker explained the rationale behind the acquisition in a video posted on the company’s website. “Meta has finally unveiled a new vision for bringing superintelligence to everyone, and a key part of that vision is developing AI-powered wearables,” Siroker said. “We share that vision and will be joining Meta to help build it.”

Limitless had raised approximately $33 million from investors and was valued at around $368 million during its latest funding round, according to data from PitchBook. Siroker added, “We’re not working on a science fiction idea anymore; we’re building a future that is inevitably coming.”

The acquisition follows a period of aggressive talent acquisition by Zuckerberg, who has reportedly offered substantial compensation packages to attract leading AI developers from companies like OpenAI, Apple, and Google. Meta also made a significant investment in Sk AI earlier this year. This deal highlights the intense competition for AI expertise within the tech industry.

The purchase of Limitless marks Meta’s first major acquisition since completing its acquisition of virtual reality company Within Unlimited in 2023, a deal that initially faced antitrust challenges but was ultimately approved by a court. The move signals Meta’s continued investment in emerging technologies and its ambition to lead in the development of AI-driven hardware.
