Georgia Murder Suspect Dies by Suicide After I-20 Pursuit
A suspect wanted for murder in Gwinnett County died by suicide following a police pursuit on Interstate 20 in Columbia County yesterday evening, bringing an end to a tense standoff that halted traffic for over three hours.
The incident began around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2025, near mile marker 194, close to the Jimmie Dyess Parkway. Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies initiated a PIT maneuver to stop the suspect’s vehicle, which subsequently left the roadway and ended up in a ditch. According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect then died by suicide. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:21 p.m., and an autopsy has been scheduled by the Columbia County Coroner’s office.
Traffic was blocked on I-20 eastbound during the incident and the subsequent investigation, causing significant delays for commuters. The Georgia State Patrol assisted with the investigation. This event occurs less than two years after the tragic loss of Columbia County Deputy Brandon Sikes, who was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop on I-20 in April 2024; details of Deputy Sikes’ death are available through the Officer Down Memorial Page. Such incidents highlight the inherent risks faced by law enforcement officers.
No other injuries were reported in connection with yesterday’s pursuit. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the initial murder investigation in Gwinnett County and the subsequent pursuit. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation provides resources and support for investigations involving law enforcement pursuits.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death, and further details will be released as they become available.
