The mission, carried into space aboard a Blue Origin New Glenn rocket, consists of two small orbiters designed to investigate the Martian atmosphere. These cost-effective spacecraft are part of a broader vision to revolutionize solar system exploration through the use of smaller, more efficient technologies.
ESCAPADE, which stands for Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers, aims to unravel the history of the Martian atmosphere. Billions of years ago, Mars possessed a much denser atmosphere that allowed for liquid water to flow on its surface. Determining what happened to that atmosphere remains a major challenge in planetary science. The two orbiters, named Blue and Gold, will gather new insights by measuring magnetic fields and the interaction of the atmosphere with the solar wind.
A notable aspect of the ESCAPADE mission is the innovative trajectory the spacecraft will take to reach Mars. Rather than following a traditional path, the orbiters will first travel to the L2 Lagrange point, where the gravitational forces of the Sun and Earth are balanced. After a year of collecting data about the Sun, they will pass Earth and use its gravitational field to gain momentum. This method is not only more fuel-efficient but also offers greater flexibility in launch timing.
The ESCAPADE mission exemplifies collaboration between universities, commercial companies, and the government.
