NASCAR’s Norm Benning Involved in Fiery Crash at Talladega Superspeedway

NASCAR driver Norm Benning, 73, was involved in a frightening incident during yesterday’s Love’s RV Stop 225 at Talladega Superspeedway when his truck burst into flames.

The incident occurred on lap 65 while Benning was driving the No. 6 Chevrolet for Norm Benning Racing, immediately prompting a caution flag. Flames engulfed the undercarriage of the vehicle as Benning quickly maneuvered down the banking and exited the truck with assistance from the AMR Safety Crew. “Get it stopped, right there. Ambulance is right there. Get out,” was heard over the team radio, according to reports. Benning was transported to a local hospital for evaluation; his condition is currently unknown.

This incident comes as Benning is considered NASCAR’s oldest driver, having competed part-time in the Truck Series since 2002, and previously in the Xfinity and Cup Series. The crash occurred after Benning had already returned his truck to the garage for maintenance earlier in the race. The race also saw championship contender Grant Enfinger crash out on lap four, and Layne Riggs sustain damage after contact with another vehicle, adding to the dramatic events at Talladega. Yesterday’s race ultimately concluded in overtime with 19-year-old rookie Gio Ruggiero securing his first career victory in the No. 17 Tricon Garage Toyota. Officials are investigating the cause of Benning’s fire, and further updates on his condition will be released as they become available. AMR provided immediate medical support at the scene.
