Lando Norris Wins Mexico City Grand Prix, Takes Championship Lead
Lando Norris secured a dominant victory at the Mexico City Grand Prix today, becoming the new Drivers’ Championship leader by a single point after finishing ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen in a thrilling race.
Norris led from start to finish, crossing the line 30.324 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Leclerc, while Verstappen finished just 0.725 seconds behind in third. An impressive drive from Haas’ Ollie Bearman saw him hold off McLaren’s Oscar Piastri for fourth, a result that shifts the championship standings. Piastri’s fifth-place finish means he relinquishes the championship lead to his teammate, Norris, though by only one point. The race also saw a 10-second time penalty issued to seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during a battle with Verstappen.
The race wasn’t without its drama, with several retirements including Liam Lawson, Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso, and Carlos Sainz. Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell finished sixth and seventh respectively, with Hamilton in eighth. Esteban Ocon and Gabriel Bortoleto rounded out the top ten. This victory marks Norris’s tenth career win and represents a significant turning point in the championship battle as the season nears its conclusion; the drivers’ championship is now wide open.
“What a race,” said Norris. “I could just keep my eyes focused, I could just keep eyes forward and just focus on what I was doing. A pretty straightforward race for me which is just what I was after. Good start, good launch, good first lap and I could go from there.” F1 will next travel to Interlagos for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, taking place over the weekend of November 7-9.
