Vance Demands White House Identify Official Who Dismissed Pope’s Immigration Concerns

Vice President JD Vance is demanding to know which White House spokesperson reportedly dismissed Pope Leo XIV’s recent call for U.S. immigration authorities to allow detained migrants access to communion, escalating a dispute over the administration’s immigration policies.

The controversy began after Democratic Catholic activist Christopher Hale published comments on his Substack, Letters from Leo, detailing the Pope’s appeal following reports that migrants at an Illinois facility were denied the sacrament. Pope Leo XIV, who became the 267th pontiff in 2024, urged authorities to respect the religious liberty of migrants, stating they should “allow pastoral workers to assist with the needs of these people.” Hale claims a White House spokesperson responded to his inquiry by saying, “the pope doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

Vance reacted sharply to the alleged comment, posting on X today, “Hey Chris, which WH spokesperson gave you this comment?” Hale, in turn, criticized Vance and President Trump, stating, “If President Trump and Vice President Vance put as much energy into lowering prices as they put into denying Catholics the Eucharist, working families might finally be able to afford groceries without divine intervention.” This dispute highlights the growing tension between the administration’s policies and the teachings of the Catholic Church, particularly regarding the treatment of migrants – a significant portion of whom, estimated at up to 90%, are Catholic, according to recent analysis of immigration data. The Vatican has long been a vocal advocate for humane immigration policies, as outlined in their teachings on social justice here.

Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019 and has described himself as a “baby Catholic,” previously met with Pope Francis in April, shortly before the Pope’s death. He has consistently defended the administration’s immigration crackdown, stating at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast earlier this year, “I will speak to [my views] consistently, because I think that I have to do it, because it serves the best interests of the American people.” This latest incident underscores the complex relationship between faith and politics in the current administration. Pew Research Center provides further context on Catholic views on immigration.

The White House has been contacted for comment, and officials have yet to respond to Vance’s demand for the spokesperson’s identity.
