Jamaica Health Ministry Urges Mental Wellness Preparations Ahead of Tropical Storm Melissa

As Jamaica prepares for the potential impact of Tropical Storm Melissa, the Ministry of Health and Wellness is emphasizing the importance of mental and emotional wellbeing alongside physical safety.

Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr Christopher Tufton, stated, “It’s normal to feel anxious in situations like this, but we want to remind everyone that mental health is just as important as physical preparedness and encourage persons to make best use of our available mental health resources.” The Ministry is offering several resources, including the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Helpline at 888-NEW-LIFE (888-639-5433) and the U-Matter Chatline, operated by the National Council on Drug Abuse. The U-Matter Chatline is specifically for individuals aged 16 to 24 and can be accessed by messaging SUPPORT to 876-838-4897 or via @ureportjamaica.

The Ministry also advises residents to stay informed through credible sources like the Ministry itself, avoid excessive exposure to potentially distressing news, and connect with family, friends, and neighbors, particularly those who are vulnerable. Prioritizing adequate rest, nutritious food, and relaxation techniques like deep breathing is also encouraged. Preparing for storms can be particularly challenging for those with pre-existing mental health conditions.

Dr. Tufton affirmed that the Ministry’s mental health professionals are on standby to provide support to individuals and communities both during and after the storm, and further information can be obtained by contacting the Health Emergency Operations Centre at 888-ONE-LOVE (888-663-5683).
