Cosplayer Integrates Meta Quest 3 into Functional Stormtrooper Armor at New York Comic Con

A cosplayer at New York Comic Con showcased a fully functional Stormtrooper outfit today, incorporating a Meta Quest 3 headset and voice-changing technology for immersive communication.

The creator, known as NovaHeadware, designed the armor to house the VR headset, with a voice changer connected to a Bluetooth speaker at the hip to simulate the iconic Imperial communications. The demonstration took place outside the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City yesterday, October 11, 2025, at 19:19:00. NovaHeadware previously gained attention online for their “Cyber Helmet” designs, which allow VR headsets to be integrated into elaborate costume helmets – you can view examples of their work here.

The integration of VR technology into cosplay is becoming increasingly popular, allowing for more interactive and immersive experiences for both the wearer and onlookers. The creator noted the potential for improved accuracy in cosplay, playfully suggesting that the Empire’s poor aim in the Star Wars universe might be due to misaligned passthrough VR technology. This development highlights the growing intersection of virtual reality and creative expression.

Representatives from Meta were not immediately available for comment, but the demonstration is expected to further fuel interest in the potential applications of VR beyond gaming and entertainment, as explored in recent reports from Road to VR.

NovaHeadware plans to continue refining the design and exploring other VR integrations for future cosplay projects.

A voice changer inside the helmet connects to a Bluetooth speaker at the hip for communications. I interviewed creator NovaHeadware as their VR Trooper in the drizzly air outside the conference on Saturday.

If you find it hard to hear the Trooper in the video below, I tend to think that might be part of the problem of dealing with the Empire when their minions bark orders through masks at citizens in a universe far, far away. (I argue they shoot so poorly because of misaligned passthrough VR)

NovaHeadware caught my eye online with their Iron Man-like designs for helmets to go around VR headsets. You can check out some of those Cyber Helmet designs online.
